Can this survey be used for evil?

Perhaps, but its not likely. Its possible that an attacker might be interested in obtaining a list of servers running a particular piece of software. That's why that information isn't exposed by this site. If an attack was interested in a specific machine, then they could just as easily collect the information by connecting to the SMTP port themselves.

What does anonymous mean?

A designation of "anonymous" means that there isn't enough information available about the server to determine what the software running on the server is. Additionally, it means I'm confident that I wont be able to identify the software in the future.

By putting a mail server online, the owners invite other machines on the network to connect to it. This survey simply connects to these publicly available servers, logs the banner greeting, and disconnects. If that's enough to cause black helicopters to appear at my house, then I think we have bigger problems...
